The Statue of Unity

... is in the state of Gujarat, in the west of India, on an island on the river Narmada, facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam. It's about three times as high as the Statue of Liberty (not including Liberty's raised arm ot the torch it carries).

The statue commemorates Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875–1950), who was the first Home minister of India and one of the leaders, along with Mahatma Gandhi, of the Indian Independence movement.

The project to build the statue was announced in 2010 by Narendra Modi, who is now the Prime Minister of India but at the time was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
